1-in-100-Year Storm vs. High-Performance Engineering
Introduction
When a severe weather bomb struck the local region, triggering a State of Emergency, the local infrastructure faced catastrophic flash flooding, massive washouts, and severely blocked culverts. When the emergency call came in on a Sunday afternoon, the team at NZPE didn't hesitate. Within 2.5 hours, we were on-site, navigating extremely tight, single-access conditions to deploy two 8-inch pumps and a massive 12-inch pump to stabilize the rising water.

The Solution
When the emergency call came in on a Sunday afternoon, the team at NZPE didn't hesitate. Within 2.5 hours, we were on-site, navigating extremely tight, single-access conditions to deploy two 8-inch pumps and a massive 12-inch pump to stabilize the rising water.

The Outcome
Over a grueling 44-day operation, this project became a masterclass in adaptive problem-solving and collaboration with our partner and the local council:
🔹 24/7 Execution: Continuous pumping during the critical first week to secure the site and control water flow.
🔹 Silt-Busting Innovation: When standard methods faced weeks of clearing immense silt build-up, we adapted, re-hiring a specialized 6-inch hydraulically driven slurry pump that broke the logjam and released the culvert in just 3 days.
🔹 By the Numbers: 44 days on-site, a heavy-duty fleet deployed (including Atlas Copco, Sykes).
This project is a proud example of what NZPE does best: stepping into critical emergency situations, adapting instantly as conditions evolve, and delivering the heavy-duty fluid dynamics solutions needed to protect our communities and restore vital infrastructure.
